> "DRM is only good for rental model."

This is a problem too difficult to tackle. As you mentioned there are increasing number of non-compatible DRM systems in the market. Before ISO come up with a file format for multimedia contents that support a standarized DRM scheme, this will continue to be a problem.

A lot of wireless carriers now stuggle to choose between using OMA standard and Microsoft DRM standard, Microsoft is proprietary and OMA is expensive. Despite all this, content owners should find a way to protect their content offered on the web, even if this is free of charge for download. DRM can be used to offer play count or usage duration for this content. The benefit is DRM protected content can be distributed over P2P networks, but users still need to get authorization to play the content. This can provide a way for content owners to track content usage effectively and design a good compensation scheme for their work.

Again, this is not an ideal solution for users. But do you think everyone will behave properly if there is a day labels start to offer content in unprotected MP3 formats?

Due to technology issues, DRM is only good for rental model.

Just my humble opinion.

I think when artist become famous, they will tend to use DRM protection for their creations. I agree DRM may not be a good solution but if there is no DRM, there is a problem.
