Gattaca 是1997年的片子，在香港的譯名叫“變種異煞” (一個完全風馬牛的名字…)，故事時代在未來，基因工程經過大大的發展之下，優生學給吹捧，父母都會在生小孩前調整好基因，讓下一代有極好的“先天“條件，更長的壽命，更好的防預力。

Vincent (Ethan Hawke) 是“天然“所生下的，也就是說父母沒有誕下他之前調整過基因，分析過後他只有大概30年的壽命。在這個基因世代，Vincent是註定沒有前途的，就算你在自己的Resume上寫得多麼好，一經接觸，公司都會憑你留下的頭髮、皮膚組織來追尋你的基因，看你的“先天“能力。在歧視已不限於性別、種族、宗教，還有基因。Vincent的父母後來不太滿意之下，在下一胎也用了基因工程調整。所以Vincent的童年也就在一切都比他優越的弟弟比較下生活。 (Continued)

這次說一說一隻我很喜歡的遊戲：Metal Gear Solid。

Metal Gear 遊戲系列很早便出現，不過真正令其大熱的是其ps版本的3d遊戲，一套以秘密潛入為主的動作遊戲。玩者使用solid snake登上shadow moses island，停止metal gear這座流動核武的啟動。

Metal Gear Solid 的故事性很強，玩者在玩遊戲時也就是在看電影，不過因為我們不單單單是觀眾，也是體驗者，所以投入感更強。故事的主題就是Genetic Engineering，將優生學應用在軍事之上。而玩者身為snake，也是優生學製造出來的“完美軍人“，究竟命運是否控制在dna之上？這是這個遊戲的主要問題。

MGS的遊戲質素很高，算是潛入遊戲系列的開山祖先之一，著重的是在不驚動敵人的情況之下秘密行動。因為有著很重的電影感，因此音樂也是相當精彩，從片頭snake在水底入，字幕帶出工作人員名單，活脫就是一個電影開場的模樣。

遊戲跟電影不同的是，電影用數個小時交代的劇情，但遊戲卻有更多的篇幅去表達故事。MGS的故事出色之處就是每一個角色都有內容、有故事，這使得角色更加立體，也令故事更札實。snake、meryl、campbell、mei ling、dr naomi、liquid、revolver ocelot、raven、psycho mantis、sniper wolf、otacon…..透過大量的對話了解得到這些角色的深入想法。有時間的話不訪開開codec對話，可以知道更多更多的故事情報和人物資料。

正如上文所說，故事說的是基因工程。snake本身就是上一代big boss的dna下誕生的完美戰士，而在shadow moses island上的士兵是經基因調整下的genome soldier，liquid是solid snake的基因孿生兄弟等等。其中dr namoi在遊戲尾段的話令我感到很深刻，也正正是點題之結語：

Each person is born their fate written into their own genetic code, it’s unchangeable, immutable. But that’s not all there is to life. I finally realized that. I told you before, the reason I was interested in genes and DNA, because I wanted to know who I was, where I came from. I thought that if I analyzed my DNA I could find out who I was, who my parents were, and I thought if I knew that then I’d know what path I should take in life. But I was wrong. I didn’t find anything. I didn’t learn anything. Just like with the Genome Soldiers, you can input all the genetic information, but that doesn’t make them into the strongest solider. The most you can say about DNA is that it governs a persons potential strength, potential destiny.

You mustn’t allow yourself to be chained to fate, to be ruled by your genes. Humans can choose the type of life they want to live. Snake, whether or not you’re in the FoxDie program isn’t important. The important thing is that you choose life and then live! Don’t you think Snake? Don’t worry, I’m going to choose life too. Till today, I’ve always looked for a reason to live, from here on, I’m going to just live.

Genes exist to pass down our hopes and dreams for the future through our children. Living is a link to the future. That’s how all life works. Loving each other, teaching each other, that’s how we can change the world. I finally realized it… The true meaning of life… Thank you Snake!

MGS在這一年得到了remake，像resident evil系列一樣，在game cube上推出mgs: twin snake，遊戲的人物和系統用mgs2，在官方網站可以看到長達27分鐘的預告片。
