you need intersection of two cubes, but not necessary to actually "split" a cube into smaller cubes (if you end up wanting a spoiler, I posted a gist on my feed earlier with my solve) — Splitting cubes is also a good solution though.
There are always more ways to do it. My take is try it any way you are sure will work, then afterwards, see if you can think of a more interesting way. Slicing will work.
